No matter what level of woodworker you are, a random orbital sander is one of the most important tools to have. They make the job of finishing so much quicker and easier to handle.
Over the years, I have worked with several different brand orbital sanders. In my experience, the orbital sander is a tool that needs replacing sooner than most other tools. Dealing with dust can’t be good for the orbital sander motors.
Thus, in 2020, I purchased a Bosch ROS20VSC orbital sander from The Home Depot. Read on to learn more about this sander and my actual experience with it so far.

Bosch ROS20VSC Orbital Sander: My Experience
First off, you should know that I was not compensated in any form for this article. This was a regular tool purchase for me and the following is my actual experience in using it.
I chose to buy the Bosch ROS20VSC orbital sander for a few reasons. After doing research online, I found an overwhelming majority of positive reviews. The main negatives I read were issues with the dust collection canister and the hook and loop pad. Those are major components of any orbital sander, so even though there weren’t many of them, I took those negative reviews very seriously.
I also prefer a variable-speed sander. The Bosch ROS20VSC orbital sander is variable-speed and has a 2.5 amp motor which is plenty for my DIY projects. Finally, it’s nice to have a carrying case for any tool, and this helped to persuade me a bit to make the purchase.
After owning it for several months, the motor feels just as strong and runs just as good as the day I bought it. The motor operates very smoothly and has been dependable for every project I’ve used it for.
The dust collection has also performed very well. This sander has a microfilter dust canister and that definitely makes a big difference with dust collection. I have found, though, that I need to empty out the canister more often than other brand sander canisters, but that doesn’t bother me. The negative reviews that I have read regarding the dust canister are mainly focused on the attachment point wearing out. My canister still attaches just as good as the day I bought it.
As I mentioned above, there are negative reviews online about the hook and loop system. I have already experienced thrown sanding discs consistently and this is far sooner than I would have liked.
Bosch ROS20VSC Orbital Sander: My Conclusion
I am pleased with the motor and dust collection, but the hook and loop system is a concern for me. It looks like that I might already need to replace the sanding pad after less than six months of ownership. You can have the best motor and dust collection but if the pad doesn’t hold up, what’s the point?
